Guar gum/borax hydrogel: Rheological, low field NMR and release characterizations

2013

Guar gum (GG) and Guar gum/borax (GGb) hydrogels are studied by means of rheology, Low Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (LF NMR) and model drug release tests. These three approaches are used to estimate the mesh size (ζ) of the polymeric network. A comparison with similar Scleroglucan systems is carried out. In the case of GGb, the rheological and Low Field NMR estimations of ζ lead to comparable results, while the drug release approach seems to underestimate ζ. Such discrepancy is attributed to the viscous effect of some polymeric chains that, although bound to the network to one end, can freely fluctuate among meshes. The viscous drag exerted by these chains slows down drug…

Effects of the novel polymer gel LeGoo on human internal thoracic arteries.

2011

Purpose Established hemostatic devices can injure vessel wall integrity. LeGoo (Pluromed, Woburn, MA), a novel poloxamer gel with reverse thermosensitive properties, is a new device for temporary occlusion of blood vessels. The present study investigated the effects of LeGoo on vascular function and morphology. Description The distal end of the human internal thoracic artery was used to assess vascular function of LeGoo-applied segments in organ bath experiments and by scanning electron microscopy. Evaluation After LeGoo application, both maximal contractile responses to noradrenaline and endothelium-dependent relaxant responses to acetylcholine were significantly reduced. Scanning electron…

The mechanism of polymer permeation through polymer gel membranes

2007

Polymer gels are capable of producing separation effects on polymers. Applications for fractionation and for osmotic measurements are possible. Investigations are reported concerning the separation properties of polystyrene layers grafted onto a supporting cellulose basis. The permeation for pure solvents and the separating molecular limit for different solvents are tested. Their size depends uniquely on the interaction between the grafted polystyrene and the solvent.

Multivalent N-donor ligands for the construction of coordination polymers and coordination polymer gels

2018

This work describes the synthesis and characterisation of several multivalent N-donor ligands and their coordination compounds and the use of these ligands in the construction of coordination polymers and coordination polymer gels. The project can be divided into two parts. The first part of the research is focused on the coordination chemistry of ring-substituted biimidazoles in acidic media. The dependence of the formation of ion pairs and zwitterionic, especially zinc and copper containing coordination compounds on the pH of the reaction medium and ring-substituents of the ligand were examined. The second part of the study deals with the preparation of Ag, Zn and Cu coordination polymers…

Bio-based chitosan and cellulose ionic liquid gels: polymeric soft materials for the desulfurization of fuel

2022

Desulfurization of fuel that avoids the introduction in the atmosphere of toxic sulfur volatile compounds, usually formed during combustion, is a viable strategy to reduce pollution. To find new efficient and eco-sustainable adsorbent materials, bio-based polymers such as chitosan (CS), cellulose (CE) and cellulose acetate (CEOAc) were dissolved in ionic liquids (ILs) to form ionic liquid gels (ILGs). Gelling and swelling ability, porosity, morphology, rheology and mechanical response were studied as a function of the polymer and ionic liquid (IL) used. The best performing gels were tested for fuel desulfurization using a fuel mimicking solution of thiophene (T), benzothiophene (BT) and dib…
